Dr. Laura Brock

Dr. Laura Brock is an Associate Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Charleston. For the past decade, she has worked on interventions aimed at closing the achievement gap by capitalizing on children’s brain development through curiosity and hands-on learning. She began her career as a teacher in the Charleston County School District and has extensive experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating out-of-school time programs. 

Rachael James
Program Manager

Rachael James is a Research Associate at the College of Charleston. She is especially interested in children’s STEM learning through tinkering, recyclables, art, and engaging, locally relevant experiences. Rachael has worked on a number of out-of-school time initiatives. 

Dr. Terry Peterson
Senior Fellow

Dr. Terry K. Peterson has worked on successful education improvements from the schoolhouse to various state houses to the White House. He develops innovative strategies and partnerships for education reform.  He is primarily focused enhancing expanded learning opportunities in afterschool and summers program through school-community partnerships across America and in developing countries. Dr. Peterson has helped initiate numerous nationwide education policies positively affecting millions of students, including the very successful expansion of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers from 10 schools to 11,000 schools and the development of the E-Rate that helps bring technology to almost every school and library in America. At the state level, he has developed reforms and funding proposals for early childhood education; teacher recruitment; performance pay; school innovation funds; accountability systems; and the arts in the basic curriculum. Dr. Peterson serves on ten national, state and local education organizations including chairing the national Afterschool Alliance. He is the editor of the landmark compendium, Expanding Minds and Opportunities: Leveraging the Power of Afterschool and Summers for Student Success.  As Senior Fellow to the Afterschool and Summer Learning Resource Center, Dr. Peterson will assist with program development, partner with clients, and serve as a strategic advisor to the Interim Director and Interim Assistant Dean. 

Melanie Greene
Administrative Assistant

Melanie Greene serves as an Administrative Assistant and supports the Afterschool & Summer Learning Resource Center, as well as the Center for Partnerships to Improve Education and the College of Charleston Call Me MISTER program.  As Administrative Assistant, Melanie can assist with ASLRC event registration or billing questions.   She is also responsible for the management of social media and the ASLRC E-newsletter.
